Feeding a crowd at Christmas doesn't need a catering tray or a pile of frozen appetizers. A table of simple homemade finger foods looks generous, tastes better and costs a lot less, especially when most of it can be made ahead.
Below are 12 cheap Christmas party food ideas, each with a rough batch cost and how much it makes at typical US prices. At the end there's a sample spread that feeds about 20 people for around $65, or roughly $3.26 a head.
The cheapest Christmas party foods are ones built on eggs, potatoes, chicken drumsticks, ground beef, cheese and seasonal fruit: deviled eggs, a veggie tray with homemade dip, cheese and grape skewers, meatballs, potato bites, finger sandwiches and homemade cookies. A spread of nine of them feeds about 20 people for around $65 at typical US prices.
Prices are typical US prices checked in early November 2026 (US Bureau of Labor Statistics average prices and USDA weekly grocery ad reports). Yours will vary by store and area.
Batch costs assume you already have pantry basics like salt, pepper, oil, mayo, mustard, spices, baking powder and vanilla.
1. Deviled eggs
Makes: 24 halves · Batch cost: about $2.27
You need: 1 dozen eggs, plus mayo, mustard and paprika from the pantry.
Hard-boil the eggs (about 12 minutes), cool in cold water, peel and halve. Mash the yolks with 1/3 cup mayo, 1 tsp mustard, salt and pepper, spoon back in and dust with paprika.
2. Veggie tray with onion dip
Makes: about 20 snack servings · Batch cost: about $6.87
You need: 1 lb baby carrots, 2 cucumbers, 1 head of celery, 16 oz sour cream, onion powder and dried herbs.
Cut the cucumbers and celery into sticks. Stir 2 tsp onion powder, 1 tsp dried parsley or dill, salt and pepper into the sour cream and chill for an hour so the flavors come together.
3. Cheese and grape skewers
Makes: about 40 skewers · Batch cost: about $11.59
You need: 1 lb block cheddar, 2 lb red seedless grapes, toothpicks.
Cut the cheese into cubes and thread a grape and a cube onto each toothpick. Red grapes and orange cheese look festive on a white plate.
4. Cranberry meatballs
Makes: about 40 meatballs · Batch cost: about $14.92
You need: 2 lb ground beef, 1 egg, 2 slices bread (crumbled), 12 oz fresh cranberries, 1 cup sugar.
Mix the beef, egg, bread crumbs, salt and pepper, roll into 1-inch balls and bake at 400°F for 15–18 minutes. Simmer the cranberries with the sugar and 1 cup water for 10 minutes, then keep the meatballs warm in the sauce in a slow cooker.
5. Loaded potato bites
Makes: about 40 bites · Batch cost: about $9.03
You need: 3 lb bag small red potatoes, ½ lb bacon, ¼ lb cheddar, half of a 16 oz tub of sour cream.
Halve the potatoes, toss with oil and salt and roast cut side down at 425°F for 25–30 minutes. Top each with a little sour cream, grated cheese and crumbled cooked bacon.
6. Sticky orange drumsticks
Makes: about 15–18 drumsticks · Batch cost: about $7.64
You need: 5 lb chicken drumsticks, 2 oranges, ½ cup sugar, garlic powder.
Season the drumsticks and bake at 400°F for about 40 minutes, until they reach 165°F inside. Simmer the orange juice, zest, sugar and 1 tsp garlic powder until syrupy and toss the hot drumsticks in it.
7. Egg salad finger sandwiches
Makes: 32 small triangles · Batch cost: about $3.80
You need: 8 eggs, 1 loaf white bread (about 20 oz), mayo from the pantry.
Hard-boil and chop the eggs, mix with ½ cup mayo, salt and pepper. Make 8 sandwiches, cut off the crusts if you like, and cut each into 4 triangles.
8. Hot bean and cheese dip with chips
Makes: about 20 servings · Batch cost: about $11.41
You need: 1 lb dried pinto beans, ½ lb cheddar, 16 oz potato chips or tortilla chips, cumin.
Cook the soaked beans until very soft (or use a pressure cooker), mash with a little cooking water, 1 tsp cumin and salt, top with grated cheese and bake at 375°F until bubbling.
9. Cranberry cream cheese dip with apple slices
Makes: about 15 servings · Batch cost: about $7.50
You need: 8 oz cream cheese, 12 oz fresh cranberries, ½ cup sugar, 3 lb bag of apples.
Simmer the cranberries with the sugar and ½ cup water until thick, then cool. Spread the softened cream cheese on a plate and spoon the cranberry sauce over it. Serve with apple slices (toss them in a little lemon juice or orange juice so they don’t brown).
10. Sugar cookies
Makes: about 36 cookies · Batch cost: about $3.26
You need: 2¾ cups flour, 1½ cups sugar, 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, 1 egg, baking powder, vanilla.
Cream the butter and sugar, beat in the egg and 1 tsp vanilla, then mix in the flour, 1 tsp baking powder and a pinch of salt. Roll into balls, flatten slightly and bake at 375°F for 8–10 minutes.
11. A bowl of clementines
Makes: 15–20 pieces of fruit · Batch cost: about $4.97
You need: One 3 lb bag of clementines.
Pile them in a bowl with a few sprigs of greenery. Easy, fresh and gone by the end of the night.
12. Soda and orange water
Makes: about 25 cups · Batch cost: about $8.53
You need: Three 2-liter bottles of soda, 1 lb oranges for sliced-orange water.
Put out the soda alongside big jugs of tap water with orange slices, which costs almost nothing and gets drunk more than you think.
Pick these nine and you have a full, festive table with something for everyone, including kids and vegetarians (the eggs, veggies, cheese, potato bites without bacon, cookies and fruit).
